There was a lot of thought that went into getting involved in BJJ; I'm not half as fast or have half the endurance of my former self. Having fulfilled my life academically, and professionally, I still have a feeling there is something missing. Grappling, whatever the form, had always been a compass of focus for personal growth. With all the stresses of the world, it's nice to be able to drop the bricks for an hour, and just focus on myself. Additionally, BJJ offers a level of mechanical sophistication that I can appreciate.
There can be a lot of hesitation that goes along with jumping into something new. Knowing that I would be getting involved in unfamiliar territory I made a promise that I would be patient with myself. I've never been afraid to step outside of the box and learn new practices; my only challenge is having done it so late in life and so far removed from my physical former self. These days I'm not really like others when it comes to matters of health & fitness or physical activity. I didn't join BJJ for usual reasons, and really have no hardline goals other than to learn, and learn more. With that, all else will fall into place. Perhaps when my daughter is old enough she can share in the growth, and learn some necessary skills.
